About this work

Born of rot and harvest, The Patchling rises from the pumpkin rows as a grinning guardian of the cursed field—autumn twisted into appetite.

Collector lore

Farmers once said the soil here was too rich.

Too fertile. Too eager to grow.

The first season it was pumpkins—massive, swollen things that split their own vines. The second season, the scarecrows began to rot standing upright, as if something inside them was feeding. By the third harvest, no one came back after dusk.

That’s when The Patchling rooted itself fully.

It isn’t stitched together like a scarecrow, though it wears the suggestion of one. It crawls through the rows on knotted vine limbs, dragging the scent of wet earth and split rind behind it. The jack-o’-lantern grin carved across its face is not decoration—it’s bone and pulp and hunger. The tongue tastes the air for trespassers.

It does not guard the pumpkins.

It grows them.

And every autumn, when the sky burns orange and the wind carries the dry whisper of corn husks—

it waits for someone curious enough to wander into the patch after dark.
